illustrator, Lori Lohstoeter, and I traveled to East Africa
in 1994 to meet the real-life Beatrice and research our story.
At the time,
Beatrice was going to school in the capital of Kampala. We drove
her back to her village to visit her family, a six-hour trip.
eatrice
graduated from Gayaza High School in Kampala, Uganda in December
of 2002 (In Uganda, school starts in January and finishes in
early December.) In June of 2003 she arrived in the United
States and served as a Heifer International Ambassador
at Overlook Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts. In June of 2004, Beatrice graduated with honors from Northfield Mt. Hermon School in Massachusetts. She is currently a junior at Connecticut College in New London, CT.
