Through the use of slides, I take the students on my journey to East Africa to meet Beatrice, whose real-life story inspired the best-selling picture book.   I introduce the story of a Mayan girl by sharing my trip to Guatemala and then showing the students my steps in producing a manuscript from writer's notebook to final revision.   Students become familiar with writer's process through the joy of poetry. In this workshop, students not only write and perform their own poems but also gain a deeper understanding of the creative process.
