Poetry and Process – Springdale School Student Work
Last spring I worked with 5th graders in Stamford, CT. The students were learning about the human body, so we experimented with several poetic forms, using the human body as our inspiration.
Ode to My Jaw
Jaw bone oh jaw bone,
without you I couldn’t taste,
taste the chips in my cookies.
You are white,
white like a pearl shining,
shining like the yellow sun,
keeping me warm.
You let me chew like the wind,
as fast as a cheetah
and as quiet as a blink of
the eye.
You are like a rhinoceros
surrounded by a skull,
the skull of life.

Prayer to My Feet
You help me
to walk to my granny’s house
so I can eat her chewy cookies.
You are the best.
I will take care of you no matter what.
I will put you in agua caliente so
you will stay nice and warm.
I will put you in gorro guantes so
you won’t be cold.
You smell as good as las galletas
de mi mama.
I love you so much.

Ode to My Nose
The Lord installed you, nose,
He made you shiny and round,
you’re able to sniff out the
scent of a cookie miles away.
How could I live without you,
with your wonderful sense of smell,
so perfect and so smooth.
Despite the fact
that you are first
to go and catch a cold,
I’ll always think of you,
when I stop to smell
a daisy.
You are like the moon,
on a gorgeous summer sunset.
Or the silver stars with
gorgeous sparkles, or
little black sunglasses
so polished and so clean,
with one little black beauty mark.
Always will I remember you,
when I stop to smell a daisy.
